Replacing teeth

To replace lost teeth there are now more options thanks to major advances in implant dentistry which has found its way into general practice over the past ten years. You can mask the loss with a fixed bridge or dentures, but an individual artificial tooth, known as an implant, offers a long term answer.

Dental implants

Dental implants offer a safe long-term natural-looking solution for replacing a missing tooth or teeth.

The two-part process involves first a small screw-shape titanium cylinder placed into the bone of the upper or lower jaw, to replace the root part of the tooth. After about three months when the bone has grown around the implant, a crown is attached to give you a fully functioning tooth.

Dental implants with proper oral hygiene procedures, can last for life and are suitable for most people. We have considerable implant experience and can talk you through the process to help you determine if it is the right solution for you.

Why have dental implants?

When a natural tooth is lost, the bone supporting that tooth also disappears over time, sometimes within months. The only way to prevent this loss of bone and volume is by means of an implant. It is the only replacement option which looks and feels like a natural tooth. Age is not a restriction on having implants.

The benefits of dental implants

  • Unlike ill-fitting dentures, which can have a tendency to move around uncomfortably in your mouth, dental implants stay firmly in place.
  • Implants help protect the jawbone by keeping it stimulated and they prevent existing teeth from moving around.
  • They eliminate the speaking and chewing problems that may be caused by missing teeth or ill-fitting dentures.
  • They can provide a significant boost to your confidence by restoring your smile.

Why do we use Bicon Implants?

Having just attended the annual Bicon user group day in London, we once again came away inspired by the team from Boston, USA. Bicon has been revolutionising the implant industry with the use of short implants, and continue to lead the way.

Why are short implants better?

Because by being less invasive, it simplifies the placement and reduces the risk. Importantly, it would often eliminate the need for bone grafting procedures.

Bicon is also the only implant system to be associated with bone growth around the top of the implant, as opposed to bone loss with many other implants. For these reasons, we are confident in the knowledge that we provide the best option in implant dentistry.

Bridges

This option for replacing a single tooth or multiple teeth involves placing a crown on your healthy teeth either side of the missing one, and attaching a crown to these to fill the gap. Disadvantages include the sacrificing of healthy teeth to attach the bridge to, increased maintenance to avoid decay of the anchor teeth and the need to replace it after several years.

Dentures

If you have lost several or all of your teeth, dentures offer a traditional answer if implants and bridge work are not possible. This can be made of an acrylic or metal framework, to which teeth are attached. Great care is taken by our on-site laboratory to ensure a comfortable fit.
